Zen in Subiaco – what happened

We headed to Zen Japanese restaurant in Subiaco this weekend, it’s been a while. I’m not sure whether it’s us or the restaurant but something was very different. The wait staff weren’t Japanese, were yelling across the restaurant, the chopsticks were plastic and the place just seems dirty.
The tori-karaage and most of what we had was great, maybe family-restaurant level / izakaya in Japan. The saba / mackerel was under cooked, panna cotta tasted like fridge and tempura was soggy. We would have given this place a 5 star rating before, now it’s down to a 3.
One positive was the normal level of awareness / customer service from the chef. He knew before the wait staff when we needed attention. Not sure if we’ll go back again.
