Where we stayed in Hokkaido. Looking out from the hotel to the hot springs below.
These morning have to be some of my favourite time spent in Japan. A cold breeze blows up the hotel walls so if you stick your head out, it just clears your head 110% in the morning. Or just chill on the tatami mats near the open window for a slow wakeup. Cold morning air, warm futons and peace and quiet.
Just love it.
Here one minute, there the next

It really is the weirdest feeling to keep popping between 2 different countries and lives. Now being back in Australia and looking at photos of locations we walked daily, causes a kind of weird time shift in the brain. You can hear the sounds, smell the smells, feel the road under your feet. The wind in the trees to the right, the sound of kids on the way to school in the distance, it all replays.
I expect it all to just suddenly spring back to life just like it does in movies about old memories that have really been pre-shot and then frozen on screen.
I expect the kids to call out from behind the front door, “dadda, I’m coming too!”. A brisk walk to school, joining the flow of mothers pushing prams towards the kindy. Chatting the whole way, greeting the others on the way home. Arriving at the gate to be greeted by the principal every morning with her mega super over hyper pretense she puts on for all of the kids, .. while the mothers are around :)
The wait while Jess dilly dallies at the classroom entrance, visits the toilet, changes shoes, looks around for the 100th time, gets surrounded by her happy, settled mates and finally gives up and heads into the classroom with the teacher and 10 kids surrounding her.
